10 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE

A different way of teaching
So many schools open their doors to the ever-increasing number of students.

So why Marica?

A new concept of school appears in society. A school is a place where a child learns with joy, honesty and sincerity, values and skills that will help him later to fare well and to offer his selfless contribution for the progress of humanity.

How to achieve this goal?

Marica has completed 10 years of dedicated services to children. Here are the main points of the school policy:

A limited number of children per class.
We consider that a teacher can only give dedicated services and individual attention to 27 students maximum. A child is a person and has the right to talk and to expect an answer to his questions. He feels happy when the teacher checks the work done and gives a word of encouragement to improve or continue. A school should reproduce the caring family pattern to keep the child in a similar or better environment. The generated atmosphere gives more confidence to the beginners especially.

Using toys, educative material, story panels, dramatisation and colourful attractive textbooks stimulates the children's interest and curiosity, specially in small classes, where identification and wide use of visual memory are the main exercises. The do-it-yourself method brings wonderful results even among handicapped children. They watch their class mates doing and try to reproduce. Naturally, books are selected with great care so that they can support this active learning. This is the reason why in small classes, books are purchased from the public market, although the price is high.

Animated online education takes over static books. In a fraction of time, the slides displayed on the monitor induce immediate visual understanding. Lengthy explanations are not necessary any longer. The more traditional text books used in the higher classes provide the theories and exercises. The children can read again in the evening and the morning session comes back to their mind. The assimilation is faster. A second point is taken into consideration. Most children visiting Marica schools hail from Andhra Pradesh. For them, the state syllabus prepares them for the college.

Once a child enjoys using the computer to study every subject, it is natural for him or her to play with the keys and explore the nearly infinite possibilities of the machine. Children are naturally curious and their imagination is great. They like to discover and the machine brings them great satisfaction. The computer classes are practical: children are taught the classics, typing and the use of the main software so that they can use a computer, at home or in a shop.

Computers efficiently support the teacher's demonstration. They catalyse the children's attention and they shorten the assimilation time. The knowledge is dynamic. The child, more receptive, discovers more and learns with less efforts, reacts easier to the stimuli and develop the ability to face life with his own reactions. He or she brings quality more than quantity knowledge to his brain.

Beyond the hi-tech and the modern approach of life, education must be made social: every child has the right of identification as a person. He needs respect to be prepared for a responsible adulthood. No segregation should be accepted unless it is on medical grounds. The words ˜every child™ means that all children, even those who are very poor, isolated, handicapped should be accepted in a regular school.

At Marica, children are accepted on a first come first served basis. In every class, blind, handicapped and very poor are also welcome if they are physically fit to move independently and if they do not need specialised permanent care. This quota represents 16% of the city school and 64% of the Marica group of schools.

Generosity is a challenge for the management and the teachers. It is difficult to bring together children with different abilities and of different backgrounds, but, with love, patience, dedication and professionalism, it ecomes quite possible.

The result obtained is better than good in many regards: polio children walk and play cricket, low vision students type on an English typewriter and a computer and they also use a braille machine and an abacus successfully. They compete with their classmates, rank first in class in many subjects, including cycling and running. Hyperactive children come back to everyone's level and slow learners develop a keen interest to improve. Parents give less importance to everyday difficulties as they feel a better, friendly and successful support.

Teachers acquire a deeper sense of confidence, friendship, honesty, patience and hard work. The management fosters friendship and mutual support - a larger family concept where all are equally important, needed and loved.

The future is only beyond the door of the present, it is never too soon to start and get ready.

Several specialised departments help the school to extend help to the disabled students :

L.V.Prasad and Hadley school offer rehabilitation and education to low vision children, mostly. They also provide teaching methods for the teachers. They guide parents and educators to cope better with their daily activities and difficulties.

Using the latest technologies makes a low vision child as comfortable as a sighted one in a class. The first approach is different but the goal is the same. Braille is mainly used to bring the knowledge to the child. Then, the verbal and written expression is in English, since typewriters and computers are used to hand over the exercises. The class teacher can correct the homework without any difference.

NIMH bring methods to assist all children having a mental challenge. Associating life with balanced group and appropriate techniques brings very encouraging results. Regular meetings are organised to plan and NIMH visit Marica to bring support and give more advice to the teacher in the class itself.

Like all families, children like to visit their friends. In the same manner, Marica promotes international friendship.

Foreign students are invited to visit the school and Marica students can visit a foreign family if they wish so. Links are established with other schools abroad and students exchange programme can be organised to suit the children's timings and interests on both sides.

Implementing such a plan needs time and place. In the expansion plan Marica wants to give more to the children. The school of Masab Tank has become too small and inadequate to the modern teaching methods.

The need for a new place was deeply felt by all teachers and parents alike. After a difficult research, a land was identified at Tolichowki and the purchase formalities could be completed on 14th February 2002.

The management is happy to offer a spacious house of 3920 square feet. The ground floor will be ready for use in June and the floor will be built very soon after, as the building permission in already obtained.

The new school offers a friendly and studious atmosphere in a well developed area of Hyderabad. It is well connected to the main centres of the city. Emphasis is given to security, comfort and modern technologies.

Dear parents and children, you are heartily welcome at your new school early June 2002.

With best friendly greetings to all.

Marie Christine.

PARENTS APPRECIATE

WHEN VISION FAILED ..

First day of my son's schooling!
He was away from his beloved Mum & Family for the first time. After sending him to his class, I was restless and felt crabs inside me. That day, cooking was not done. Phone calls were not answered. The only question in my mind is

Will he be safe?

I was in front of his school gate an hour before. Minutes became hours. Finally, the bell rang. I saw my son. I saw him with a beautiful smile.

THANK YOU MARICA

You made not only my son smile, but also many other children with disabilities;

You are UNIQUE & OPTIMISTIC. Because many schools in the city haven not thought
of INTEGRATION in spite of the need.
